Our garden is on a 2000 sq. ft. territory which is where we started our farm to provide sustainable nutrition for our transition home. We started by purchasing 100 chicks to begin our poultry farm on January 26, 2019. Geoffrey, the farm’s keeper, stayed with them all night, even sleeping next to them, to make sure they had charcoal burning to provide constant heat. Geoffrey followed very detailed inoculation and feeding plans to ensure survival. It was a success! In May 2019, we had our first egg. We now produce 90 trays per week that we sell in the local market. We supply our children with the protein they need and sell the rest to sustain our organization on a monthly basis. Our plan is to increase the number of chicks to 500 this year. To do this however, we will need to expand our current chicken coop.

On the farm, we have been able to plant and grow 12 different types of vegetables since March 2019. Given that Uganda is in tropical climate, we can grow and sustain vegetables throughout the year. We grow: carrots, peppers, tomatoes, “sukumaweki” which is heavy in protein and iron, cabbage, pumpkin and more! We have plans to grow many more vegetables because the site is big enough to continue growing the farm as donations come through.
